Mulhlenberg clips Nittany Lions, 9-8

READING, PA (March 14, 2012) - The Penn State Berks baseball team battled back from a seven run deficit, but Muhlenberg College held on to win 9-8 in the Nittany Lions home opener at Hintz Athletic Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions trailed by one with runners on second and third and just one out in the bottom of the ninth. But Mules (10-3) closer Ryan Rechten shut the door with back-to-back strikeouts to earn the save.

Muhlenberg pulled ahead 8-1 after putting up six runs in the top of the fourth. Berks fought back with three in the fifth, one in the sixth and two more runs in the seventh.

Rich Schlamowitz went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs, while Connor Corson scored three times. Nick Vitelli was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Kevin Heilman and Kyle Hartman each drove in a run for Berks.

Freshman Dusten Rutt shut down the Mules with four solid innings of relief. He allowed only three hits and struck out two. He sat down six straight batters as the Nittany Lions were in the middle of their comeback bid.

In the top of the ninth, Schlamowitz backhanded a chopper deep behind the third base bag and made a perfect strike across the diamond for the first out. On the next pitch, Ryan Tantala sprawled out at first base to snare a would-be single to right.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Wesley College for a non-conference contest tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
