Nittany Lions hold their own against No. 3 Christopher Newport

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 7, 2012) – Powered by strong pitching, the Penn State Berks baseball team did not back down to the challenge of No. 3 ranked Christopher Newport University on Wednesday afternoon. The Nittany Lions battled until the end, but suffered a 3-1 setback on the third day of The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Sophomore Kyle Hartman started the game on the hill with three no-hit innings. Kevin Heilman then threw 3.0 innings of four-hit ball. The senior right-hander surrendered three unearned runs and recorded one strikeout. Matt Emrick worked the final two innings, allowing one hit and striking out one batter.

The trio limited the Captains (11-2), who entered the game hitting .290 and were averaging close to eight runs per game, to only five hits and struck out two.

The Nittany Lions (0-5) got on the board first with a run in the second inning. They held that lead until CNU plated one in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth.

Senior Michael Ference went 3-for-4 to lead the Nittany Lions. He was knocked in for the lone run by sophomore Phil Anderson. Nick Vitelli, Connor Corson, Rich Schlamowitz and Hartman each recorded a hit for Berks.

The Nittany Lions will conclude their trip down south with two games tomorrow afternoon. They will take on Averett University at 3 p.m., followed by Eastern University at 6 p.m.
