Strong pitching, clutch hitting leads baseball to doubleheader sweep

READING, PA (March 26, 2012) - Aaron Stupp and Ryan Tantala each threw complete games and Kyle Hartman smashed a home run to lead the Penn State Berks baseball team to a doubleheader sweep over Mount Aloysius College on Monday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions (3-12) took the first game by a score of 6-3 and used a late rally to earn a 3-2 victory in the nightcap. Both teams took advantage of the strong gusts of wind heading from center field to home plate by combining for 10 stolen bases on the day. Several routine flies turned into hits with the help of the wind.

In the opener, Stupp scattered six hits and allowed three earned runs to record the first complete game of his career. The sophomore right hander had two strikeouts and surrendered just one base on balls.

The Mounties (4-12) led 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third, but executing small ball and taking advantage of errors swung the momentum in Berks favor. Ryan Zawaski singled and Tyler Salvati's bunt was booted by the pitcher to put the first two runners on base. Christian Marcin did his job moving the runners up and NICK VITELLI followed with an RBI single. With runners at the corners, Vitelli stole second and Salvati scored when the catcher's throw soared into centerfield.

The Nittany Lions added two more runs in the fourth after Rich Schlamowitz and Kevin Heilman started the inning with singles and pulled off a double steal to get in scoring position. Zawaski later drove in Schlamowitz with a single and Salvati grounded out to second and drove home Heilman in the process.

Stupp worked out of numerous jams in the top the fifth. The leadoff batter singled, but Stupp was able to catch him leaning at first on his third pickoff attempt in a row. The next batter reached on an error, but Stupp got a strikeout and a foul fly to the catcher to put the inning away.

Hartman added the final blow with a two-run shot over the fence in right field to give Berks a 6-2 lead. It was his first homer of the season and second of his career.

In the second game, Hartman had an RBI double in the first and NICK VITELLI added an RBI double in the third. The Mounties broke through with two unearned runs in the fourth to even the game.

Tantala, who picked up the third complete game of his career, scattered seven hits and allowed only two unearned runs. He recorded a season-high five strikeouts. The sophomore right-hander received some defensive help in the top of the fifth.

The Mounties had one-out and runners on the corner with the contest knotted at 2-all. Connor Corson drifted under a fly to right and delivered a perfect strike to the plate to nail the runner by a step.

Schlamowitz sliced a triple down the right field line to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Heilman reached first on an error by the drawn-in infield, but Schlamowitz had to remain at third.
Michael Ference grounded out to the second baseman, but Schlamowitz left on contact and scored with ease to go ahead 3-2.

After a stretch of hard fought losses, the Nittany Lions are winners in three of their last four games with conference play around the corner. They will travel to Gwynedd-Mercy College on Wednesday for a game at 3:30 p.m. Berks will then travel to New York for conference doubleheaders at Keuka College (Saturday) and Cazenovia College (Sunday).
