Baseball splits doubleheader with Susquehanna

READING, PA (March 24, 2012) - The bats came to life as the Penn State Berks baseball team defeated Susquehanna University, 10-1, in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. In the second game, the Crusaders rallied in the final three innings for an 8-6 comeback win.

Kevin Heilman tossed a four hit, complete-game gem in the opener to lead the Nittany Lions to their first win of the season. The senior right-hander struck out two batters and allowed a run in the opening inning. Heilman sat the Crusaders (10-9) down 1-2-3 in three innings, including the top of the seventh. Rich Schlamowitz made a diving catch on a line drive to record the final out of the game.

The top five players in the Nittany Lions batting order combined to go 10-for-15 with six RBI and nine runs scored. Connor Corson (3-for-3) ripped two doubles, while Nick Vitelli (2-for-4, 3 runs scored) and Schlamowitz (2-for-3, 3 RBI) each added one double.

Ryan Tantala and Ryan Zawaski each had one hit and drove in two runs. Christian Marcin continued his solid performance at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI.

The Nittany Lions countered Susquehanna's run in the opening frame with one in the bottom of the first and two in the second and tacked on two more in the fifth. In the sixth inning, Berks sent 11 batters to the plate and broke it open with five runs.

The offense carried over to the nightcap, as the Nittany Lions recorded two runs in the first, three in the second and one more in the third. Berks was held hitless the rest of the way and only had three base runners the rest of the way.

Vitelli went 2-for-2 with two RBI and crushed two doubles. Schlamowitz added an RBI double and finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored and one stolen base.

Brent Rhoads gave up three runs – one earned – in 3.2 innings of work, but received a no-decision. He matched a career-high with three strikeouts.

The Nittany Lions will host Mt. Aloysius College in a non-conference doubleheader on Monday, March 26 at 1 p.m.
