Men's hoops explode in record-breaking win over Abington

READING, PA (February 08, 2012) - Six players finished in double digits as the Penn State Berks men's basketball team established a single-game school record for points scored in an 112-92 victory over Penn State Abington on Wednesday evening at Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions gave their crowd of 223 fans something to cheer about with a 58-30 lead heading into the intermission. In the second half Abington put up 62 points, but it didn't matter as Berks remained hot with 54 points. The previous record was 100 points which was recorded last against SUNYIT (December 4, 2010) and Cazenovia College (January 10, 2010).

Shawn Green, Connor Hough and Jim Wagner each established career-high's on the setting day. Green led all scorers with 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor and 6-of-6 at the foul line. Hough was a very efficient 11-of-15 from the floor, while Wagner went 5-of-9. As a team, the Nittany Lions shot 61.1%, which was also a single-game best.

Dontez Reid continued on his scoring binge with 15 points. He was dialed in from long distance with four 3-pointers. Jeff Schmidt came close to the fist triple-double of his career, finishing with 13 points, 16 rebounds and eight assists. The 16 boards were a career-high, surpassing his previous best of 14 against Morrisville State in January. Michael Porter rounded out the Berks in double-digits with 11 points.

Jon Skinner had several strong drives through traffic and matched his career-best with nine points. Tom Smith added seven points and five rebounds.

Abington was led in scoring by Josh Howard (19 points) and Will Alton (18 points). Alton was 8-for-8 from the foul line and also handed out a team-best four assists.

Close to $200 dollars was raised as the men's and women's basketball team's hosted a "Pink Games" fundraiser. Both teams donned pink shoot around shirts, socks and sweatbands to show their support.

All proceeds benefitting the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County
, a non-profit organization that provides hope, information, and emotional support to women diagnosed with breast cancer and those who care for and about them. (Click here for more information) Donations were made at the door and a half-court shooting contest was held at halftime of both games to raise additional money.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Penn State Hazleton on Saturday, February 11. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
