Nittany Lions clinch home playoff game with win over Gallaudet

READING, PA (February 19, 2012) - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team kept up its stellar play with an 83-67 victory over Gallaudet University in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) regular season finale on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (10-13 overall, 9-5 NEAC South) extended their consecutive win streak to six with the win. The two teams will get to see each other again very soon, as Berks will host the Bison (11-12, 8-6 NEAC South) in the NEAC play-in game on Tuesday, February 21 at 8 p.m. in Beaver Community Center.

Berks never trailed in the game and had raced out to a 12 point lead with 12:41 to go in the opening half. Gallaudet fought back and cut the lead to four points in the final minute, but a clutch 3-pointer by Dontez Reid put the Nittany Lions ahead 40-33 at half.

Shawn Green maintained his strong play on the offensive end of the court with 23 points. He was 8-for-8 at the foul line and matched a season-high with three 3-pointers. The sophomore guard also recorded three rebounds and three assists.

Connor Hough strong offensive output has played a vital role in the Nittany Lions recent win streak. He was 8-for-11 from the field and recorded 16 points. It was the seventh straight contest that Hough reached double-figures and ninth time in the last ten games. He also pulled down eight boards.

Reid finished the contest with 13 points and a season-high seven assists. Tom Smith gave a strong all-around performance with 12 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocked shots, while Jeff Schmidt chipped in 10 points, five boards, four assists, three steals and two blocks.

After stealing a pass at midcourt with 43 seconds remaining, Schmidt went on a breakaway and gave the crowd one last thing to cheer about with a violent one-handed slam.

Gallaudet received 16 points and 10 rebounds from Daniel Fava, while Tony Tatum and Brandon McMillan each chipped in 15. Layton Seeber finished with nine points and six assists.

The winner of Tuesday's contest will travel to No. 1 seed and host Morrisville State College for the semifinal and final rounds on Saturday, February 25 and Sunday, February 19.
