Men's basketball defeat Wells for first win of the season


AURORA, N.Y. (January 7, 2012) - Four players scored in double-figures to lead the Penn State Berks men's basketball team to a 76-73 triumph over Wells College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) on Saturday afternoon.

After a 20-day layoff, the Nittany Lions returned to action strongly to earn their first victory of the season. Berks moves to 1-8 overall, while the Express fall to 4-8 and both teams are 1-2 in the conference. All games have been decided by three points or less in the Nittany Lions three NEAC contests.

Shawn Green, Tom Smith and Connor Hough each tallied 14 points to lead Berks. Green went 6-for-6 from the floor, including two 3's and Hough was a very efficient 7-for-9 shooting. Tore Turner added 12 points with the help of a 6-for-6 showing at the foul line. As a team, Berks converted 13-of-16 (81.2%) at the charity stripe, while Wells went 15-of-24 (62.5%). Turner had a contest-high five assists.

Jeff Schmidt recorded 10 rebounds, one shy of his career-high. He also had four assists and blocked three shots. Wells, however, won the battle of the boards by a 45-35 margin.

The Express were led by Terry Harrison's 23 points and 12 rebounds. Andre Sawyers also recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. Ej Taylor rounded out the scorers in double digits with 12.

The lead switched back-and-forth throughout most of the first half with Berks eventually taking a 36-30 lead into the halftime intermission. The Nittany Lions led by as much as 10 points in the second half before Wells evened the game at 62 with 5:09 to play.

The Nittany Lions will face Keuka College in an NEAC contest on Sunday, January 8 at 1 p.m.
