Schmidt's career game not enough in loss to Keuka

KEUKA PARK, NY (January 8, 2012) – Junior Jeff Schmidt led all players with his career-high 21 points and 13 rebounds, but the Penn State Berks men's basketball team dropped its North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest, 72-67, to Keuka College on Sunday afternoon.

The teams played evenly throughout the contest with the Storm (3-8 overall, 3-1 NEAC) taking just a 38-37 lead at the half. The largest lead was seven points by Keuka with 8:36 to play in the game. The Nittany Lions (1-9, 1-3 NEAC) cut that lead down to one point with just over five minutes to play, but Keuka would not relinquish the lead.

Schmidt tallied 15 of his points in the first half with five field goals and added four points at the foul line. He finished the game shooting 8 for 13 from the floor. Schmidt grabbed six offensive rebounds and seven on defense for his second double-double of the season.

Tore Turner chipped in 14 points, while Shawn Green drained three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points. Tom Smith was a rebound shy of a double-double with his 12 points and nine boards. Connor Hough rounded out the Nittany Lions scorers with seven points.

Coty Paige led the Storm with 17 points, followed by Teddy Tuggles and Tyler Hixson with 11 points each. Brian Cunliffe set up the scoring efforts with his game-high five assists.

Keuka outshot the Nittany Lions 46.1% (25-54) compared to 46.9% (28-for-65), but Berks dominated with a 43-34 margin on rebounds.

The Nittany Lions will return to action on Saturday, January 15 against NEAC foe SUNY Cobleskill. The contest is schedule for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
