Morrisville State rally to down Nittany Lions



READING, PA (January 21, 2012) - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team fought hard, but Morrisville State used a second half surge to pull out a 78-68 victory in Saturday afternoon's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest.

The Nittany Lions (2-11, 2-5 NEAC South) led 37-30 at half and were up by as much as 10 with 14:31 to play. The Mustangs (9-6, 6-0 NEAC South) then used a 17-0 run to take the lead for the first time since 14:59 remaining in the first half. Tom Smith tallied six straight points for Berks to cut the deficit to four points with two minutes to play, but the Mustangs secured the win by converting all eight of their free throw attempts down the stretch.

The strong shooting at the foul line was constant throughout the game for Morrisville State, as they went 20-for-22 overall. They were also red hot from the floor in the second half with 55.6% (15-27) shooting.

Four Nittany Lions scored in double figures, led by junior guard Dontez Reid's 16 points. Smith chipped in 14 points, 12 of which came in the second half, and grabbed six of his eight rebounds after the intermission. Jeff Schmidt notched his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 boards. Shawn Green added 10 points, three assists and three steals.

Schmidt helped swing the momentum into the Nittany Lions favor with a dunk in the first half. Connor Hough, who finished with eight points, brought the crowd to its feet with a breakaway dunk in the final minutes of the game.

Mickey Davis, who leads the conference in scoring at 18.5 point per game, had a game-high 20 points. He caught fire in the second half with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Kucjok Ater added 14 points and eight rebounds, while Brandon Hanks chipped in 12 points off the bench.

The Nittany Lions will host NEAC foe Cazenovia College on Sunday, January 22 at 1 p.m.
