Reid leads Nittany Lions in convincing win over Cazenovia

READING, PA (January 22, 2012) - Dontez Reid matched a career-high in scoring with 24 points to lead the Penn State Berks men's basketball team to an 82-65 win over Cazenovia College on Sunday afternoon.

With the victory, the Nittany Lions improve to 3-11 overall and 3-5 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference, while the Wildcats drop to 4-12 overall and 1-6 in the conference. The Nittany Lion offense registered their highest point total of the season, while the defense surrendered the lowest of the season. All nine Nittany Lions finished with two points or more in the contest.

Coming off of a tough loss to Morrisville State, the Nittany Lions started strong out of the gate. The score was 12-0 in Berks favor at the 13:49 mark of the first half, with eight of those points coming from Reid. The Wildcats, who trailed 37-17 at the break, cut their deficit to nine with 14:33 to play. But the momentum swung back in Berks' favor after a clutch 3-pointer by Michael Porter put the score at 49-37.

Reid last scored 24 points on January 8, 2011 in a win over Morrisville State. On Sunday he reached that total on 6-of-12 shooting from the field, including four 3-pointers. Reid converted on eight of his 10 trips to the free throw line. Reid also handed out six assists and recorded three steals.

Also finishing in double-figures were Connor Hough (16 points) and Tom Smith (11 points). Jeff Schmidt dominated in all facets of the game, finishing with 12 rebounds, seven points, seven assists and three blocked shots.

Late in the first half the crowd was treated to vicious slam dunks by Smith and Schmidt. Smith created a turnover at midcourt, raced to the hoop and threw down a two-handed jam. Eight seconds later, Schmidt leaped up for an offensive rebound and slammed it home all in one motion.

The Wildcats were led by Dieter Clauess' 12 points, followed by Darnell Sampson and Bryant Winans with 10 points each.

The Nittany Lions will return to action on Saturday, January 28 at Lancaster Bible. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Beaver Community Center.
