Men's hoops fall in heartbreaker to Abington

ABINGTON, PA (January 18, 2012) - As has been the case all season in conference play, the game came down to the wire for the Penn State Berks men's basketball team. Unfortunately, they found themselves on the wrong side of a 71-68 final against Penn State Abington on Wednesday evening in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) showdown.

With the loss, Berks falls to 2-10 overall and 2-4 in the NEAC South, while Abington improves to 7-9 overall and 4-1 in the conference. All six of Berks' NEAC games have been decided by five points or less this season.

Berks rallied from an 11 point halftime deficit to take a two point lead with 11:50 left in the game. The teams battled evenly down the stretch, with the Abington gaining the biggest lead at four points. Connor Hough hit a pair of free throw's with 1:01 left to play to cut the deficit to one point, but Berks was unable to finish off the comeback.

The Nittany Lions had four players finish in double-figures, as Jeff Schmidt lead the charge with 14 points. Tom Smith followed with 13 points and a game-high four steals. Hough and Shawn Green each chipped in 12 points. Green also brought down a team-high 10 rebounds to record the first double-double of his career.

Abington was led by reigning NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week Mike Marvin, who recorded 15 points and 19 rebounds. Mike Colacci hit five 3-pointers and finished with a contest-high 21 points.

Berks will host a pair of NEAC contests this weekend, starting with Morrisville State on Saturday, January 21 at 1 p.m. They will then face Cazenovia College on Sunday, January 22, beginning at 1 p.m. in Beaver Community Center.
