Express knocks off Berks in overtime

AURORA, N.Y. (February 13, 2011) – The Penn State Berks women's basketball team's playoff hopes hit a snag after dropping a 69-68 overtime decision in a road North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest at Wells College on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (11-12, 10-10 NEAC), who fell to 1-3 in games decided in overtime, dropped their third straight and fourth of the last five. Berks is now a half game behind St. Elizabeth for fifth place in the conference standings and even with SUNY Cobleskill for the sixth and final playoff spot with two games left to play. The Express improved to 4-19 overall and 4-16 in the NEAC after splitting the season series with Berks.

Ashley Roser is first in the NEAC in points and rebounds per game and today's performance greatly enhanced those leads. The freshman guard dropped 32 points and recorded 31 rebounds in the victory. She also handed out six assists and recorded two blocked shots.

Junior guard SHAKIYLA STONE recorded the first double-double of her career with 16 points and 10 steals. The 10 takeaways set a single-game school record, surpassing the previous high of eight which was attained my several players.

Steph Binder chipped in 12 points, while EMILY PUFNOCK added 10 points. KELLIE WILSON gave a strong performance coming off the bench for nine points.

The Express turned the ball over 40 times compared to just 15 by the Nittany Lions. The difference was Wells 62-43 domination on the glass. In addition to Roser cutting up the defense, the Lions were hindered by 26.8% shooting from the floor and a 20-for-39 effort at the free throw line.

Berks trailed by as much as 14 points in the first half, but were able to narrow the margin to 33-31 going into the break. Pufnock hit a 3-pointer with 18:56 left in the regulation to give the Lions their first lead (34-33) of the contest. Roser's layup with 22 seconds left sent the game to overtime, where the Express never trailed.

The Lions will have Senior Day in their regular season finale against Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday, February 16 at Beaver Community Center. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
