READING, PA (February 16, 2011) - Steph Binder matched a career-high with 26 points to lead the Penn State Berks women's basketball team to an 87-70 victory over Penn State Harrisburg in Wednesday evening's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) showdown.
Binder and Dorian Bishop each gave a solid all-around effort in their final game played in Beaver Community Center. The duo was honored prior to the game in Senior Day festivities by receiving flowers, a framed picture signed by all of their teammates and a Penn State Berks mug. They were also greeted at midcourt by their parents, head coach Tim Coleman and a roaring applause from the crowd.
"Dorian and Steph helped us form a foundation," said Coleman. "They both started as freshman on this team and it helped us get to where we are today. If they don't stay with the program for four years, we would not have been able to win the NEAC Championship last season. It also helped for the future, showing the incoming athletes what is capable when staying with the program."
The win keeps the playoffs within reach as the Nittany Lions improve to 12-12 overall and 11-10 in the NEAC. A win on Saturday's home game with St. Elizabeth would give the Lions their third consecutive trip to the conference tournament. Berks split the season series with Penn State Harrisburg (16-7, 15-5), who are currently the third team in the conference standings.
Binder rose to the occasion numerous times throughout her magnificent career and tonight was no different. She also brought down 10 rebounds to record her third double-double of the season. Bishop finished the contest with six points, five assists and three clutch blocked shots. Â Â
"Steph played up to her potential tonight," added Coleman. "She doesn't want the season to end and knows that we are capable of competing with any team in this conference. She played like a team leader tonight."
Jamie Norris assisted on Binder's buzzer-beater to take a 32-27 lead into the halftime intermission. After a back-and-forth first half, the Lions used a 12-2 run midway through the second stanza to gain their biggest lead of 21 points.
In the final 2:50 of the game, the Nittany Lions scored all 15 of their points at the free throw line. Keyaundra Williams had eight of her season-high 14 points in that time, while Shakiyla Stone earned five of her 12 at the charity stripe down the stretch.
Chanell Jones continued her strong play off the bench by adding a season-high 10 points. Taylor Kreider led all rebounders with 12 and the Lions won the battle of the boards by a 51-38 margin. Norris and Bishop each notched three blocked shots and Jones recorded two.
Harrisburg was led by Monet Cunningham's 14 points, followed by Daril Foose with 12. Dorothea Dixon recorded seven steals for Harrisburg.
The two teams combined to commit 63 turnovers and 58 fouls. They also totaled 63 foul shots made and 90 foul shots attempted. The Lions 36 foul shots made matched a program-best, while the 87 total points is tied for second all-time.
The Lions will look to carry this momentum Saturday's showdown at St. Elizabeth. The regular season finale is set to tip off at 1 p.m.
