Men's hoops fall in home opener to Staten Island

READING, PA (December 9, 2011) – The Penn State Berks men's basketball team suffered a 70-56 setback to the College of Staten Island in a non-conference contest at Beaver Community Center on Friday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions, playing before their home crowd for the first time this season, jumped out to a 21-13 lead in the opening 10 minutes, but the Dolphins closed out the half on a 23-6 run to take control of the contest. Berks cut the lead to six points on a layup by Tom Smith with 2:45 remaining in the contest, but were unable to finish off the comeback bid.

Dontez Reid led the offensive attack with 12 points, including two very deep 3-pointers. Tore Turner knocked down a number of acrobatic shots in the lane late in the second half to finish with nine points. Smith finished with six points and a team-high seven rebounds, while Tim Smith added eight points and five boards. Jeff Schmidt recorded a contest-high three blocked shots.

The Dolphins, who had four players finish in double figures, were led by Matthew Van Manen (19 points, 12 rebounds). Bloochy Magloire and T.J. Tibbs each netted 13 points and Jordan Young added 12.

Both teams struggled from 3-point range with the Nittany Lions going 3-for-22 and Staten Island converting just 5-of-14. Despite the poor performance from beyond the arc, the Dolphins managed to shoot 50.0 percent (27-for-54) from the floor, while the Nittany Lions finished at 34.9 percent (22-for-63).

The Nittany Lions will travel to the nation's capital for a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Sunday, December 11 at 1 p.m.
