Gallaudet outlasts Nittany Lions comeback effort



WASHINGTON, D.C. (December 11, 2011) - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team closed out the final nine minutes on a 23-5 run, but the comeback effort was too late as Gallaudet University held on for a 71-69 win in Sunday afternoon's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest.

The Nittany Lions trailed 66-46 with 9:09 left in the game before Tim Smith and Dontez Reid found a scoring rhythm. The duo combined for 17 points and five rebounds during the comeback.

Smith recorded nine of his season-high 15 points during the rally. Reid hit back-to-back 3-pointers to make it 68-67 with 2:52 to play. It was the slimmest Bison lead since 36-34 with two minutes left in the first half. Gallaudet converted 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to earn the victory and move to 2-0 in the conference, while the Nittany Lions fell to 0-2 in the NEAC.

Tom Smith turned in another dominating performance with a team-best 18 points and eight rebounds. The sophomore big man was 7-of-10 shooting from the floor and went a perfect 4-for-4 at the foul line. Smith also played strong defense with four steals and two blocks.

Tore Turner rounded out the Berks players in double figures with 13 points. He knocked down three baskets from beyond the arc and dished out three assists. Jeff Schmidt brought down seven rebounds and swatted three shots.

The Bison were led by Tony Tatum's 21 points and eight boards, while Layton Seeber added 18 points. Tyler Crace drained four 3-pointers and finished with 13 points.

The Nittany Lions will host Albright College on Sunday, December 18 at Beaver Community Center. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
