Men’s basketball rally comes up short at Alvernia



READING, PA (December 8, 2011) – Tom Smith netted 12 of his team-high 18 points to lead a second half scoring surge, but it wasn't enough as the Penn State Berks men's basketball team fell, 74-62, on the road to Alvernia University on Thursday evening.

The Nittany Lions erupted for 41 points in the second half after shooting 43.9 percent from the floor. Smith, who recorded six points in the final minute of play, was an efficient 6-of-7 shooting in the second half. In addition to leading in the scoring column, Smith brought down a team-best eight rebounds.

Jeff Schmidt also came to life in the second half, scoring 10 of his 11 points after the halftime intermission. Tore Turner rounded out the Berks scorers in double-figures after dropping 15 points. He recorded a contest-high five steals. Dontez Reid chipped in eight points with a team-high two from beyond the arc.

The Crusaders (3-3) rode the hot shooting of Josh Vargas, who led all scorers with 25 points. He was 9-of-15 from the field, including three 3-pointers. Brian Nerney added seven points and 10 rebounds, while Chris Davis handed out six assists.

The difference maker was made at the foul line as the Crusaders converted 20-of-30 attempts. Berks only had 10 trips to the charity stripe, where they were earn eight points.

The Nittany Lions will host their home opener on Friday, December 9 against the College of Staten Island beginning at 7 p.m. in Beaver Community Center.
