Second half surge leads Gwynedd-Mercy past Nittany Lions



GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA (December 5, 2011) – The Penn State Berks men's basketball team kept pace throughout most of the first half, but Gwynedd-Mercy College pulled away for an 89-74 win in Monday evening's non-conference contest.

The Nittany Lions never led, but trailed by single digits throughout the opening half. The hot shooting Griffins led 50-41 at halftime and pulled away with 56.5 % shooting from the floor in the second half.

Tom Smith notched his first double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Nittany Lions. Shawn Green knocked down three 3-pointers and finished second on the team with 14 points. Nate Weldon added a season-high 10 points.

The Griffins also had three players finish in double figures, led by Brendan Stanton's 16. Dan DelConte chipped in 15, while Brandon Williams added 10.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Alvernia University on Thursday, December 8 at 7 p.m.  Berks will host its home opener on Friday, December 9 against the College of Staten Island at 7 p.m.
