Nittany Lions rally, but fall in final seconds to Harrisburg



MIDDLETOWN, PA (December 3, 2011) – Michael Perone had a career-day and the Penn State Berks men's basketball team overcame a 14 point halftime deficit before falling 81-79 to Penn State Harrisburg in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Southern Division contest on Saturday afternoon.

Harrisburg (3-3, 2-0 NEAC South) carried a 45-31 lead into the halftime intermission and maintained the 14 point lead as late as the 11:57 mark of the second half.

Perone knocked down five 3-pointers and finished the day with 22 points to lead four Berks players in double figures. The junior guard tallied 17 of his points in the second half, including a game tying 3 with 13 seconds left in the game. Harrisburg's Jordan Gatchell hit a jumper with four seconds remaining for the game winner.

Junior Jeff Schmidt also played a vital role in the Nittany Lions (0-3, 0-1 NEAC South) comeback effort, recording 10 of his 12 points in the second half. He also finished the contest with 10 rebounds for a double-double. Tom Smith also notched a double-double with 10 points and a team-high12 boards.

Wanyae Hartsfield rounded out the Berks players in double figures with 10 points. He also added seven rebounds, four assists and four steals. Nate Weldon had a career-high four blocked shots and Schmidt followed with three. Tore Turner chipped in eight points and handed out a team-high six assists.

Harrisburg also had four players finish in double figures, led by Kenton Alston (23 points, 10 boards) and Steve Jones (10 points, 14 rebounds). Gatchell added 14 points and Amani Glenn had 10.

Berks finished the day with a net scorching 47.6% shooting from the floor, while Harrisburg finished 38.0%. The difference maker, however, was the performances at the foul line. Harrisburg converted 20-of-29 compared to 14-of-29 by Berks.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Gwynedd-Mercy College for a non-conference contest on Monday, December 5 at 7 p.m.
