READING, PA (October 7, 2011) – Ruth Fortuna emerged in her second set tiebreaker just before sunset to lead the Penn State Berks women's tennis team to a 5-4 victory over Cedar Crest College on Friday afternoon.
The Nittany Lions (3-1) were ahead 2-1 after the doubles play, but Cedar Crest rallied in the singles matches. The No. 1 duo of Crystal Hitz and Aimee Hoffman cruised to an 8-1 win, while No. 2 doubles team of Amanda Fuller and Elizabeth Kehm were 8-3 winners.
The Falcons evened the match with a win in sixth singles. Kristina Hatter made quick work in her No. 4 singles match, winning 6-0, 6-1 to put Berks ahead again. Kehm padded the lead with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at the second flight. The Falcons battled back though, tying the match at 4-4 with wins at first and third singles.
After taking the first set 6-2, Fortuna battled back from a second set deficit to force a tiebreaker. She returned every shot that Rakia Otoo hit her way to win the tiebreak 7-1, thus clinching the victory for herself and the team.
The Nittany Lions will host Alvernia University on Wednesday, October 12 at 4 p.m.
