Kreider, Pufnock guide Lions to win

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. (January 9, 2011) – Freshman guards Taylor Kreider and Emily Pufnock powered the Penn State Berks women's basketball team to a 72-61 road victory over Cazenovia in Sunday's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest.

It was the first time this season the Lions won back-to-back contests. They now have a 5-6 overall record and move to .500 in the conference at 4-4. Cazenovia fell to 4-7 overall and 4-4 in the NEAC

The only time the Lions trailed in the contest was at 2-1. They led by as much as 20 points in the first half with the help of a 16-4 run. At halftime Berks led 39-23 and maintained that lead throughout the second stanza. The Wildcats closed to within seven points, but it was too late as only 1:02 remained in the game.

Kreider and Pufnock combined for 47 points as each turned in season-best performances. Kreider was 11-for-19 from the field and finished with 26 points. She also grabbed 15 rebounds to register her fourth double-double of the season. Of Kreider's 15 rebounds, 10 were on the offensive end.

Pufnock added 23 points and broke her previous high score for the second straight contest. She shot 6-for-18 from the floor with three 3-pointers and tallied six points from the foul line.

Dorian Bishop pulled down 11 boards and Steph Binder recorded nine, as the Lions outrebounded Cazenovia 59-44. The rebounding domination helped Berks to a 16-3 advantage in second chance points.

The only area of concern for the Lions was the 13-for-42 showing from the free throw line. The Wildcats shot an efficient 71% at the line.

Cazenovia was led by Megan McDermott's 21 point and 16 rebounds. Jessica Converse added 12 points.

Penn State Berks will be back in action next weekend when they host Wells and Keuka in Beaver Community Center. Both games are scheduled to tip-off at 1 p.m.
