Berks women down Wells, win third straight

READING, PA (January 15, 2011) - Four Nittany Lions finished in double figures as the Penn State Berks women's basketball team defeated Wells College, 71-38, in Saturday afternoon's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest at Beaver Community Center.

The win evened the Lions at .500 overall at 6-6.  They also earned a winning record in the NEAC for the first time all season at 5-4 with their season high third straight win. The Express fell to 2-11 overall and 2-9 in the conference.

In the first half alone, the Lions were able to match the point total of Wells for the entire contest. Berks doubled up the Express with a 38-19 lead going into the locker rooms at half. The 38 total points by Wells was the lowest scored against the Lions this season.

Steph Binder led Berks with 12 points, followed by Taylor Kreider with 11. Jamie Norris and Shakiyla Stone each chipped in 10. Kreider and Norris both made all four of the first four shots they took.

Kreider, who gave a stellar all around performance, finished with game-high's of seven steals and five assists. She also grabbed five rebounds, which tied Norris for the team-lead. Freshman guard Kellie Wilson also turned in a strong effort with a personal-best nine points and four steals.

Wells forward Ashley Roser entered the contest averaging a conference high 21.8 points per game and 12.4 rebounds per game. The suffocating Lions defense held her to just 11 points on 4-of-20 shooting. Roser did raise her eclipse her rebound average though, as she managed 14 boards.

After shooting 13-for-42 last Sunday in a win over Cazenovia, the Lions shot a more respectable 61.8% (21-for-34). Berks also forced 32 turnovers, while committing only 16.

The Lions will return to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. in a NEAC showdown with Keuka College in Beaver Community Center.
