MORRISVILLE, N.Y. (January 8, 2011) - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team returned to action after a 20 day hiatus, defeating Morrisville State 64-45 on Saturday afternoon in a North Eastern Athletic Conference contest.
The win improves the Lions to 4-6 overall and 3-4 in the NEAC, while the Mustangs fall to 2-7 and 2-5 in the conference.
Emily Pufnock led Berks with her career-best 18 points. The freshman guard was 5-for-9 from the floor, including three 3-pointers and shot 5-of-6 from the free throw line.
In addition to her offensive output, Pufnock had a strong showing on the defensive end of the floor. Pufnock and Taylor Kreider provided pressure on the Mustang guards and forced a handful of errant passes. Kreider, Dorian Bishop and Kellie Wilson each recorded three steals.
The Berks defense held the Mustangs to just 15 first half points and forced 23 turnovers.
Kreider added 15 point and 10 rebounds, marking her third double-double of the season. It was also the sixth time this season that she finished in double figures. Bishop grabbed out eight boards and tallied six points.
Chanell Jones gave a solid effort coming off the bench with eight points and seven rebounds. The Lions bench outscored the Mustangs 18-0. Berks also held a 26-8 advantage in points off of turnovers.
The Mustangs were led by Nijah Townsend's 19 points and 13 rebounds.
The Lions will return to action tomorrow at noon in an NEAC contest against Cazenovia.
