READING, PA (January 22, 2011) – EMILY PUFNOCK drained four free throws in the final four seconds as the Penn State Berks women's basketball team held on for an 82-77 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) victory over the College of St. Elizabeth on Saturday afternoon at Beaver Community Center.
In between a pair of Pufnock's foul shots, suffocating defense by KELLIE WILSON and DORIAN BISHOP forced an Eagles (5-11) turnover with 1.1 seconds remaining to help secure the win. With the win, the Nittany Lions (8-7) overall record went above .500 for the first time this season. The Lions improved to 7-5 in the NEAC, while the Eagles fell to 5-8 in the conference.
Pufnock led the Lions with 19 points, 15 of which came in the first half. With 4:14 remaining until intermission, Pufnock knocked down her third 3-pointer of the half. She didn't score again until her critical shots at the line with the game on the line. Pufnock also shared the wealth, handing out a season high six assists.
Taylor Kreider recorded her sixth double-double of the season with a 17 point, 10 rebound effort. STEPH BINDER was shot 5-for-8 from the field and added 16 points.
Berks built an early 26-11 advantage, but the lead was squandered and the Nittany Lions took a 41-33 lead into the break. Maesoon Deeb's old fashion 3-point play evened the game at 57-57 with 9:55 to play in the contest. It was the only tie of the game and first time the Lions didn't own the lead since trailing 4-2. KEYAUNDRA WILLIAMS' jumper put Berks up two and the Lions would not relinquish that lead the rest of the way.
Deeb had game-high's 26 points and 16 rebounds. Sabrina Jarmolinski scored 19 points and Diane Da Silva chipped in 15 for the Eagles.
The Lions shot 57.1% in the first half and finished the game with a very efficient 52.5% from the floor. St. Elizabeth shot 49.2% on the day and were 9-for-17 from beyond the arc. The difference maker came at the foul line with the Lions converting 15-of-22, while the Eagles only went 6-for-14.
Penn State Berks will host a NEAC contest with Wilson College on Tuesday, January 25 at 6 p.m. in Beaver Community Center.
