ABINGTON, PA (January 19, 2011) - Dorian Bishop knocked down a jumper with five seconds remaining in overtime to give Penn State Berks a 57-56 win over Penn State Abington in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Wednesday evening.
Berks, winners in four out of its last five, improves to 6-5 in the NEAC and 7-7 overall. Abington fell to 3-11 overall and 2-9 in the conference after being swept in the season series.
Bishop and junior Jamie Norris played vital roles for the Nittany Lions down the stretch as the duo scored all seven of Berks' overtime points. Bishop finished with a team-high 13 points – two shy of her career high – and recorded 11 rebounds which matched her career best. Norris scored five of her 11 points in the overtime period and brought down 12 boards.
Leading 49-48 in regulation, Norris grabbed an offensive rebound on a missed foul shot that led to Shakiyla Stoneknocking down one of two free throws. Abington sent the game to overtime with a jumper by Samantha Frick as time expired.
Berks trailed by nine points with 5:22 remaining in the second half, their biggest deficit of the game. Emily Pufnock cut into that lead with a jumper and started a 14-5 run for Berks. Pufnock, Bishop and Steph Binder each tallied four points during that stretch.
In the opening half, Abington used a 12-3 run to build an early cushion. The resilient Berks squad crawled back and trailed 28-27 at intermission.
Frick led all scorers with 21 points, followed by Trish Watson's 13 and Brittany Middleton with 12. Elizabeth Hilbert led Abington with 11 rebounds.
After going 0-for-19 in Sunday's loss to Keuka on 3-pointers, Berks "improved" with a 3-for-16 effort tonight. Abington went 7-for-20 on 3's with Frick and Watson combining for six. Berks held a 22-14 advantage in the paint and the bench outscored Abington 13-0.
The Berks women will host the College of St. Elizabeth on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a NEAC contest at Beaver Community Center.
