MIDDLETOWN, PA (December 8, 2010) – Six players finished in double-figures as the Penn State Berks men's basketball team won in overtime, 98-92, over North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) foe Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday night.
Berks improved to 3-4 overall with the win and 3-1 in the conference, while Harrisburg falls to 2-5 and 2-1 in the NEAC. Berks is now 2-0 in overtime games this season.
Tore Turner gave his finest performance of the season with 22 points and four assists. He shot 50% from the floor and was a perfect 7-for7 at the foul line. In the Berks' losses this season they have struggled at the free throw line, but tonight they were 23-for-32.
Thomas Smith also turned in a spectacular effort with 18 points and six rebounds. He converted a season-best 6-for-9 from the charity stripe.
Harrisburg had a 47-40 advantage at intermission and led by as much 15 with 5:45 remaining in the contest. But Smith scored six points of a 14-0 run to go up 79-78, Berks first lead since 2-0. That lead came on free throws by Dontez Reid before a second ran off the clock, due to a technical foul against Harrisburg in warm-ups.
In the overtime session, Berks shot 5-of-9 from the field and were perfect at the foul line to pull away from Harrisburg.
Devin Moore scored 14 points and had a team-high eight rebounds. It was his fourth straight game scoring in double-figures. Connor Hough added 13 points (6-for-12 shooting) and Reid added 11, including 6-for-6 at the foul line. Wanyae Hartsfield made the most of his first start this season. The freshman guard netted 10 points with six rebounds, four steals and four assists.
The men will return to action with a nonconference contest at Albright on Saturday at 4 p.m.
