Lions outlast SUNYIT in overtime thriller

READING, PA (December 4, 2010) – The Penn State Berks men's basketball team hit the century mark in a 100-98 overtime win over SUNYIT on Saturday afternoon at Beaver Community Center.

Wanyae Hartsfield made an acrobatic layup with six seconds remaining in overtime to give the Nittany Lions a 99-98 advantage, its first lead in the extra period. Calvin Logins took the inbound and drove coast-to-coast in hopes of drawing a foul or getting the game winner. Dontez Reid set up in front of the basket and took a collision to draw the charge with 2.1 ticks left on the clock. The crowd went wild in the stands and the Berks bench jumped around as the game was all but sealed up.

The Wildcats (0-5, 0-1 NEAC) scored the first six points of the overtime. The Lions (2-3, 2-0 NEAC) scored the next six after Tore Turner hit a pair of free throws and a fast break lay-up. After a Wildcat turnover, Smith tied it up at 95 with a put back off a missed 3 by Reid.

Both teams had their chances in regulation to earn victory. Devin Moore made a free throw with 6.1 seconds left, but it was waved off due to a lane violation. Kevin Cappiello attempted a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left, but Hartsfield blocked the shot to leave the score at 89 apiece.

Earlier in the half, Reid gave the Lions its first lead of the day (51-49) with four free throws after the Wildcats were called for two technical fouls.

The team combined for 10 players in double figures, 54 free throw attempts and 16 3-pointers made. Hartsfield led Berks with 22 points, followed by Reid with a season-high 17. Moore scored 14 points and grabbed 11 boards for the first double-double of his college career. Michael Perone added 11 points and Turner netted 10.

Logins had a contest-high 31 points and Clint Foster had 23. Foster was red hot from 3-point land, as he made 7-of-11 shots.

It was just the second time that Berks scored 100 points since joining the NCAA in 2004.

The Lions will host SUNY Cobleskill at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 5 at Beaver Community Center.
