READING, PA (November 30, 2010) - Four players finished in double-figures to lead the Penn State Berks men's basketball team to an 86-77 win over Penn State Abington on Tuesday evening in Beaver Community Center.
Michael Perone nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to break a 63-all tie to lead Berks to its first win of the season and a victory in the conference opener. Tore Turner assisted on both 3's that got the crowd riled up.
Wanyae Hartsfield and Connor Hough each finished a team-high 15 points and Devin Moore, who was Mr. Clutch down the stretch, added 13. Moore scored 11 of his points in the final five minutes, all with four fouls to his name, and had a stretch of nine straight Berks points.
Hough also grabbed a team-best 11 boards to record his first double-double of the season.
Berks took a 44-34 lead into the intermission, but Abington chipped away and evened the game on a Corey Curtis layup with 7:13 remaining. But Perone's 3's put an end to the comeback bid. Shawn Green forced an errant Abington pass to Tom Smith on the next position and set up Perone's second 3-pointer.
Berks had 36 trips to the foul line, but were only able to convert 17 into points. The free throws have not been friendly to the Lions so far this season, but it was still one of their better efforts.
Abington received a 21 point, 12 rebound effort from Joshua Howard, while Cordia Mosley III chipped in 19 points. Howard picked up his fifth foul with exactly five minutes left to give Berks a break from any more damage.
The men will return to action on Saturday, December 4 when they host SUNYIT in an NEAC contest at 3 p.m. in Beaver Community Center.
