READING, PA (November 15, 2010) - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team dropped its season opener, 92-77, to DeSales University on Monday evening at Beaver Community Center.
The Nittany Lions had strong offensive efforts out of sophomore Michael Perone and freshman Devin Moore, who each scored 18 points. Perone had the hot hand from beyond the arc, connecting on 4-of-7. Moore was a very efficient 8-for-12 from the floor.
The Lions were snake bitten at the free throw line after going 2-for-11. The Bulldogs, on the other hand, made the Lions pay at the charity stripe with a 19-for-25 showing.
The Nittany Lions, who were held scoreless in the first five minutes and 44 seconds, were able to climb back and hold a 21-20 lead with less than nine minutes remaining in the first half. At the break, the Bulldogs built a 39-34 lead.
The Bulldogs were able to pull away in the second half with the help of shooting 69% from the floor.
DeSales rode the offensive efforts of Brian Hunter (28 points) and Brett Moyer (20 points). Hunter dished out a game-best six assists and Moyer brought down seven rebounds. For the contest, the Bulldogs out rebounded Berks by a 46-20 count.
Tore Turner gave an impressive all-around performance with 12 points, seven assists and seven rebounds. Tom Smith added eight points and three steals, while Dontez Reid contributed seven points. Shawn Green and Wanyae Hartsfield each chipped in with five points.
The Nittany Lions will travel to Alvernia on Friday for an 8 p.m. contest and return home on Saturday to face Kutztown at 1 p.m.
