READING, Pa. — The Penn State Berks Men's Soccer team (0-1-1) went on the road and took on Alvernia University (1-1) on Friday, September 4. The Nittany Lions got ahead halfway through the first half, but could not hold off the Golden Wolves attack as Berks fell 3-1 on the night.
The Nittany Lions absorbed an opening stretch in which Alvernia recorded two shots and two corner kicks, a theme on the night as the Golden Wolves outshot Berks 22-1 throughout the contest. Berks lone shot found the back of the net as
Terridine Grant put Berks in front in the 23rd minute, finishing a
Sebastian Rios assist at 22:20 for a 1-0 advantage. The Nittany Lions got a free kick off a foul and kicked it deep towards the Golden Wolves side. Berks kept passing the ball around to one another with Grant kicking it to Rios then hitting a header towards Grant, where an Alvernia defender popped it up. Grant controlled the ball and hit it right to the bottom left of the goal to put Berks up. After the goal, Alvernia pushed back with seven shots and four corner kicks from 26:58 to 37:48, but
Josh Martin made three saves during that stretch to keep Berks ahead. The Blue & White protected the advantage through the final minutes and went into halftime leading 1-0.
Berks protected a 1-0 lead deep into the second half as they held off Alvernia early on. Nittany Lions absorbed sustained pressure from 47:16 to 55:46, as Alvernia generated five shots and three corner kicks during that stretch without scoring.
Josh Martin made a save on Chase Lankelis in the 71st minute, and Berks again got through another Alvernia push that included multiple shots and corners between 68:01 and 76:57 before Alvernia broke through, with Chris Hille scoring at 78:34 to make it 1-1. Alvernia moved in front on Chase Malone's goal off a Chase Lankelis assist at 82:19. Jackson Taliani added a goal at 89:19, and the Nittany Lions finished the match with a 3-1 loss.
Grant scored the Nittany Lions' goal with Rios adding an assist on the night.
Josh Martin played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded four saves.
