Berks to Add Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Beginning in 2026-27

READING, Pa. - Penn State Berks Athletics is excited to announce the addition of men's and women's indoor track & field as varsity sports beginning with the 2026-27 academic year.

The new programs will compete during the winter season, with practices beginning in October and competition running through February. The addition of indoor track & field expands athletic opportunities for student-athletes and continues the growth of the Penn State Berks athletics department.

Current head cross country coach Ryan Foster has been named the inaugural head coach of both programs. Foster will oversee the development of the fledgling teams while continuing his duties as head coach of the men's and women's cross country programs.

"At Penn State Berks, we are continually seeking ways to enhance the student experience and create new opportunities for success," said Chancellor Dr. Radha Pyati. "The addition of men's and women's indoor track & field is an exciting step forward for our campus and our athletics program. These teams will strengthen our tradition of competitive excellence while providing student-athletes with valuable opportunities to grow as scholars, leaders, and members of our community."

"The addition of indoor track and field marks another exciting step forward for our athletics department," said Director of Athletics Barry Beal. "Our mission is to create meaningful opportunities for students to compete, develop and represent Penn State Berks. We believe this program will enhance the student-athlete experience, strengthen our athletics offerings, and become an important part of our department for years to come."

Foster has quickly established a culture of success since arriving at Penn State Berks. This past fall, he guided the men's cross country team to its first-ever conference championship, a historic milestone for the program. Under his leadership, the Nittany Lions have continued to elevate their competitiveness within the conference while emphasizing academic and athletic excellence.

"When I took over the cross country program four years ago, one of the most frequent questions I received from recruits was if Berks was ever going to add a track and field program," said Coach Foster. "With that finally becoming a reality, I am looking forward to seeing a new group of student athletes compete for a championship in the Blue and White. I am incredibly honored to be entrusted by our administration staff to build this program from the ground up. I truly believe that the success of the cross country teams these past few seasons, can be replicated on the track, and can't wait to be part of it."

The addition of indoor track & field provides a natural extension for Penn State Berks' cross country student-athletes while also creating opportunities for prospective student-athletes interested in sprinting, distance running, jumping, and throwing events. The programs will begin recruiting immediately for the inaugural 2026-27 season.

Additional information regarding schedules, facilities, and recruiting opportunities will be announced at a later date.

With the addition of men's and women's indoor track & field, Penn State Berks Athletics continues its commitment to providing a comprehensive and competitive NCAA Division III student-athlete experience.
