Berks Drops Competitive Match-Up with Marywood

SCRANTON, Pa. — Penn State Berks dropped a highly competitive matchup with Marywood University by a score of 11-9 on Monday at Pacer Field. Berks collected 13 hits, including two home runs and a triple, while Marywood had 18 hits and scored four decisive runs in the eighth inning.

The Nittany Lions started strong in the first inning. Colby Crills singled, followed by Bryce Kelly's double to left center, scoring Crills. Michael DeRichie hit a sacrifice fly to bring Kelly home. Marywood answered with two runs of its own, making it 2-2 after the first inning.

In the third inning, Bryce Kelly hit a solo home run to center field, adding a run for the Blue & White. However, the Pacers responded with three runs on a series of hits, taking a 6-3 lead after the third.

The Blue & White regained the lead in the fifth inning. Michael DeRichie hit a grand slam down the right field line after a series of hits loaded the bases, putting Berks ahead 7-6 after the fifth inning.

The Pacers tied the game in the sixth inning when Mike Biskup scored on a wild pitch, leaving the score at 7-7. In the eighth inning, Marywood pulled ahead with four runs, including a home run by Watson Church and a two-RBI single by Jaylen Robinson, to lead 11-7.

During the ninth inning, Berks attempted a comeback. Michael DeRichie singled, and Michael Thalassinos tripled to bring him home. Jackson Brancato's sacrifice fly scored Thalassinos, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit. The final score was Marywood 11, Nittany Lions 9.

Bryce Kelly led the offense with four hits, three runs, and two RBIs, including a home run. Michael DeRichie contributed significantly with two hits, two runs, and five RBIs, also hitting a home run. Michael Thalassinos added a triple, driving in one run and scoring once. Colby Crills scored twice and recorded two hits, providing a reliable presence at the plate.

Amanjeet Turka delivered a strong performance on the mound for Berks, pitching 2 1/3 innings while striking out five batters and allowing two hits. John Mudri followed with 1 inning of work, conceding one earned run on one hit while issuing one walk. Tyler Gilbert pitched 2 innings, surrendering two earned runs on five hits, including a home run, and striking out one batter. Overall, the pitching staff combined for a total of 7 strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings, demonstrating resilience against Marywood's lineup.
