GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. — Penn State Berks and Gwynedd Mercy University played to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday, September 24th.
Both teams scored in the first half, with Penn State Berks netting the first goal of the match. Gwynedd Mercy responded shortly thereafter to equalize. The Berks goalkeeper made five saves, while Gwynedd Mercy's goalkeeper tallied ten saves, preventing further scoring in the second half. The first half commenced with Penn State Berks asserting early pressure, culminating in
Victoria McPoyle's opening goal at the 4th minute. The team maintained offensive momentum, creating multiple opportunities but were unable to convert further, with shots from
Payton Klopp and
Paige Thomas going wide. Gwynedd Mercy responded midway through the half when Anna Nicosia equalized in the 24th minute. Despite continued efforts from Berks, including several saved shots by Natalie Gablein, the score remained tied. The half concluded with the scoreboard level at 1-1. The second half commenced with both teams seeking to break the stalemate. Berks maintained offensive pressure, with
Sydney Gonzalez testing Gwynedd Mercy's goalkeeper, Madisson Ronn, early in the half.
Zoey Mortimer and
Devon Deery also forced saves from Ronn as Berks pushed for a breakthrough.
Defensively,
Sophia Gonzalez stood firm for Berks, denying multiple efforts from Gwynedd Mercy, including a significant save against Kira Bradley. The half saw Berks manage several shots, but despite their efforts, the score remained unchanged. The match concluded with a 1-1 draw, as neither team could find the back of the net. McPoyle scored the only goal for Berks, finding the back of the net with her single shot on target. Gonzalez made a significant impact in goal, recording five saves while allowing one goal in 90 minutes of play.
Ashley Jocham contributed offensively by leading the team with two shots on goal out of her two attempts.
Faith Wavershak also added pressure with three shots, two of which were on target.
