Lions Sweep Brandywine in Key Conference Showdown

Reading, PA- The Penn St. Berks Baseball Team earned a sweep of Penn State Brandywine, earning a pair of conference victories on Monday, April 14.   
 
Berks (8-22 Overall, 5-7 UE) found themselves in a pitchers' duel early in game one, with neither offense finding much traction. The Lions starter Parker Zook pitched the first 6.0 innings, allowing only one run on two hits, while striking out seven.
 
The Lions broke through, scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning. Berks loaded the bases for Logan Ewert with two outs in the inning. Ewert lined a single up the middle for a single and then an error by Brandywine (5-23 Overall, 1-9 UE) allowed all three runs to score, giving Berks a 3-0 lead. Brandywine scored one run in the top of the seventh inning to close within two runs.
 
Landon Eyster led off the bottom of the seventh inning by driving a single up the middle and then stealing second to move himself into scoring position. Travis Schiller then singled through the left side, allowing Eyster to score. Later in the inning, Landon Reyes singled into left field, allowing Schiller to score, putting Berks ahead 5-1.
 
Brandywine tried to pull off a late rally, scoring three runs in the top of the ninth to close within one run. Amanjeet Turka halted the rally, getting a strike out to close out the 5-4 victory.
 
Berks looked to pull off the sweep, getting off to a strong start in game two. Eyster led off first inning by smoking a triple off the right center field fence. Andrew Seibert then singled to shortstop, allowing Eyster to score. Later in the inning, Reyes reached on a fielder's choice and a throwing error allowed Seibert to score. Nick Hardesty then knocked a single into right center, allowing two more runs to score. One final error by Brandywine, allowed Hardesty to score, giving Berks a 5-0 advantage. In the second inning, Reyes used a fielder's choice to allow Eyster to score, pushing Berks' advantage to six.
 
Leading 6-1 in the bottom of third inning, Berks looked to extend their advantage. Jacob Berzonski was hit by a pitch, putting a runner on base. Eyster continued his big day, belting a double into right center, allowing Berzonski to hustle around the bases and score. Schiller kept the rally going, lining a double down the left field line, scoring Eyster.
 
The Lions continued to pull away, scoring in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth inning, Seibert used a hard ground ball to allow Cade Baumgardner to score. Berks broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning. Back-to-back walks put runners on base and then a throwing error by Brandywine allowed Hardesty to score. Baumgardner lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Ewert to tag up and score. Eyster blasted another double off the right center field fence, scoring Berzonski and giving Berks a 12-1 lead. Schiller added another run using a sacrifice fly to center field. Isaiah Dull provided one final firework, hammering a two-run home run to center field, pushing Berks' advantage to 15-1. Brandywine plated one run in the top of the seventh inning, but could not get any closer, falling 15-2.

The Lions will host cross-town foe Albright College on Wednesday, April 16. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
