Gonzalez Becomes Career Shutouts Leader in Road Win

ABINGTON, PA - Penn State Berks secured a critical conference victory over Penn State Abington winning by a score of 2-0 on Saturday, October 18.

The first half began with Berks taking an early lead. Faith Wavershak found the back of the net at the 7th minute, putting the visiting team ahead. Sophia Gonzalez played a pivotal role in maintaining this advantage, making key saves against Nayeska Ravelo and Sara Hogan to keep Abington scoreless. With this shutout victory, Gonzalez became the program's career leader, achieving her 23rd shutout victory.

The visitors continued to apply pressure throughout the half, with shots from Ashley Jocham and Paige Thomas testing the Abington defense. Despite some attempts by the home side, the visitors held firm, concluding the half with a 1-0 lead.

The second half began with the Nittany Lions maintaining pressure on the offensive end. Isabelle Wilkes tested the Abington goalkeeper with a shot in the 59th minute, but it was Devon Deery who broke through, scoring in the 75th minute to extend Berks' lead. Berks held firm defensively, with Gonzalez saving a shot in the 77th minute to preserve the clean sheet. As the half progressed, the Nittany Lions continued to create opportunities, including another shot by Deery that was saved in the 85th minute. The visitors effectively managed the closing minutes of play, concluding the match with a 2-0 victory.

Wavershak scored the game-winning goal in the 7th minute. Deery also added a goal, finding the back of the net on one of her two shots on target. Wilkes led the team with four shots, including one on goal. Gonzalez recorded a shutout with four saves, helping secure the win.
