READING, PA - Penn State Berks could not complete a late rally, falling to St. Mary's College of Maryland by a score of 2-1 at Berks Turf Field on Wednesday, October 16.
Berks captured the offensive momentum early in the first half, generating multiple shot opportunities, including attempts by
Paige Thomas and
Ashley Jocham. Despite applying early pressure, they were unable to capitalize on these chances. The Seahawks responded by capitalizing on a corner kick, resulting in a goal by Allie Petryszak in the 18th minute, assisted by Ashlyn Bonner, giving them an early lead.
Sophia Gonzalez played a pivotal role in goal for the home side, making crucial saves to keep the deficit manageable. However, the visitors extended their advantage just before the break with a goal from Bonner, assisted by Sidney Shaw, in the 43rd minute. The Nittany Lions entered the break trailing 2-0.
The second half began with Berks seeking to shift the momentum, as Gonzalez made a crucial save against Maddison Spradlin of St. Mary's at the 47th minute. Despite pressure from the Seahawks,
Devon Deery managed a shot that was saved by their goalkeeper, Kyleigh Bland. The home team found a breakthrough in the 79th minute when Deery played a ball over the top finding Jocham in stride, allowing her to blast a shot into the back of the net and narrowing the deficit to one goal. Although
Isabelle Wilkes had a chance to equalize shortly after, her effort was saved by Bland. Berks could not score again, falling 2-1.
Gonzalez recorded five saves during the match, facing 12 shots in 90 minutes. Jocham scored one goal and took six shots, with one on target. Deery contributed with an assist and managed two shots, one of which was on goal.
