SCRANTON, Pa. – The Penn State Berks volleyball team defeated Marywood in four sets on Thursday night to pick up its first win of the young season. The Nittany Lions won, 16-25, 25-16, 25-18 and 25-21.
Katelyn Williams had a game-high 17 kills, and Diana Stoltzfus followed with 14. Stoltzfus led the team with 18 digs, and Williams had 15. Audrey Risser also had 10 digs.
After dropping the first set, Berks used an extended run to tie the match at a set apiece. The 8-1 run was highlighted by four aces. Stoltzfus had the first one, and Jordan Thompson followed with three of her own. She finished with five aces on the night.
Makenzie Shoop had back-to-back kills to help Berks to a 7-0 run in the third set. That run also featured three kills by Williams and a Libby Swoyer ace. Williams finished the set with three consecutive points.
Stoltzfus and Shoop contributed to a 5-0 run in the fourth set to help Berks put the match away.
Tarynn Coldren led Berks with 21 assists followed by Swoyer's 14.
Berks returns to action on Tuesday for its first home match of the season against Elizabethtown.
