Nittany Lions fall on final day of Ripken trip

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Penn State Berks baseball team was doomed by one rough inning in a 9-2 setback to Bridgewater State University on the final day of The Ripken Experience on Friday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions finish the season opening trip with a 1-7 record, while the Bears improve to 3-4 on the year.

Ricky Peters made quick work of the BSU lineup in the first two innings, but the wheels came off in the top of the third. The Bears plated six runs on four hits and three Berks errors. The Nittany Lions got a run back in the bottom half of the third when a lead-off walk to Jonathan Myers eventually led to an RBI single by Griffin Kay.

Berks made it a 6-2 ballgame in the bottom of the sixth when Isaiah Dull, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning, scored from third on a wild pitch.

BSU put the game out of reach with three runs in the top of the eighth, with the help of three hits, two Berks miscues, and two walks.

Kay finished 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Dull and Myers each had a hit and scored a run. Colin Templin and Kolbie Reeser also recorded a hit in the game.

Peters finished with six hits allowed and six runs (one earned), while striking out four batters in 7.0 innings of work. Justin Hefner struck out four batters and surrendered two runs in 2.0 innings of relief.

The Nittany Lions return to action with their home opener against St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn on Wednesday, March 13 at 3:30 p.m.
