Lions late rally falls short

READING, PA- The Penn St. Berks Baseball team could not complete a late inning rally, falling to St. Joseph's University Brooklyn by a score of 13-9 on Wednesday, Mar. 13.  

The Lions fell behind early as the Bears scored five runs in the top of the second inning. Berks answered back in the bottom of the inning. Zach Smith and Nick Bergeman worked walks and Isaiah Dull reached on an error to load the bases. Jonathan Myers put the Lions on the board, lifting a sacrifice fly to center field to make the score 5-1. Berks struck again in the bottom of the third inning, this time with Bergeman driving a single into left field that allowed Colin Templin to score. In the fourth inning, Myers hammered a triple into the right center gap to put himself in scoring position. Kolbie Resser came through for the Lions, lifting a single into center field that scored Myers.  

The Bears halted the Lions rally, scoring eight runs over the next three innings to build a 13-3 lead. Penn St. Berks fought back in the eighth inning with Reeser smacking a single to center that scored Dull to pull the Lions within nine runs. Later in the inning, the Lions worked the bases loaded for Templin who crushed a grand slam over the left field fence to make the score 13-8. Berks made one final push in the last inning, with Bergeman leading off the inning with a solo home run. The Lions could not get any closer, falling by a score of 13-9.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Templin powered the Lions offense, going 2-3 with a grand slam in the eight innings. 

  • Bergeman recorded a pair of hits including a solo home run in the ninth inning. He finished the game with 2 RBI's.  

  • Reeser went 3-5, posting 2 RBI's driving in runs in the fourth and eight innings. 

  • Myers blasted a triple in the fourth inning, finishing the game 1-2 with an RBI. 

WHO'S NEXT  

The Lions will return to action when they begin United East play by traveling to face Penn St. Abington in the first of a three-game series on Friday Mar. 22. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
