Nittany Lions rally falls short against Neumann

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Penn State Berks baseball team rallied in the middle innings, but could not come all the way back in a 12-6 setback to Neumann University at The Ripken Experience on Thursday afternoon.

The Knights plated nine runs over their first three at-bats to build a comfortable lead. Berks scratched across a run in the bottom of the third when Jonathan Myers reached on a bunt single, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Nick Hardesty. Neumann got that run back in the top of the fourth to go ahead 10-1. In the bottom of the fifth, Hardesty again came through with an RBI single, this time scoring Jace Graybill who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. Nick Bergeman led off the sixth inning with a single and later scored on a wild pitch. In that same inning, Isaiah Dull singled and later came around to score on a ground out by Myers to make it a 10-4 score.

The Nittany Lions were able to tighten the gap with another two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Hardesty drew a walk and advanced all the way to third on a misplayed ball of the bat of Kolbie Reeser. Reeser stole second base and Hardesty came in to score. Reeser later moved up on a ground out by David Rudisill and came in to score on a ground out to short by Bergeman. The Knights tacked on a single run in the eighth and ninth, while Berks was unable to generate any more runs in the comeback bid.

Hardesty finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Bergeman went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Dull added two hits, including a double, and scored on run. Myers (RBI) and Reeser were both 1-for-4 with a runs scored and a stolen base, while Colin Amerine finished 1-for-2.

Josh Miiller struck out two batters in 2.0 innings of work, while Josiah Reptsik notched three punch outs in 4.0 innings of relief. Grant Jacoby finished with 3.0 innings of effective relief.

The Nittany Lions will wrap up their spring trip on Friday, March 8 at 9 a.m. against Bridgewater State University.
