Baseball rallies for thrilling win over Eastern Nazarene

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Penn State Berks baseball team used a big rally over the later half of the game to take down Eastern Nazarene College, 10-9, on Tuesday afternoon at The Ripken Experience.

The Nittany Lions found themselves trailing 9-0 heading into their half of the fifth inning. Nick Bergeman led off the inning with a bunt single and moved up to second on a one-out single down the third base line by Isaiah Dull. Jonathan Myers smoked a double to center to bring in Bergeman and make it a 9-1 score. Wade Kaminski tossed a 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth and Berks was able to get another run with a leadoff solo home run to right by David Rudisill. Kaminski put up another quick inning in the seventh, allowing one base runner, but leaving him stranded.

Trailing 9-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Myers singled to left followed by back-to-back walks to Zach Smith and Nick Hardesty to load the bases with one out. Kolby Reeser was hit by a pitch to force in Myers from third and Rudisill singled through the infield to plate Smith. Griffin Kay reached on a fielder's choice, which brought in Hardesty to make it a 9-5 ballgame. Bergeman delivered the biggest hit of the inning with a three-run shot to left field to pull the Nittany Lions to within one run at 9-8.

Kaminsky continued to shutdown the ENC offense in the eight. He got a ground out to Reeser to start the inning followed by a single through the left side. The next batter grounded to Bergeman at first who stepped on the bag and threw to Reeser at second for an inning ending double play. Myers drew a one-out walk and Hardesty was walked after the second out to put runners on first and second in the bottom of the eighth. Reeser roped a line drive single to center to bring in Myers and Hardesty, giving the Nittany Lions a 10-9 lead.

Josh Miiller slammed the door in the top of the ninth by striking out the side (two looking, one swinging) to record the save and giving Berks its first win of the season.

Myers went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI. Bergeman finished 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored, while Rudisill was 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored. Hardesty had a hit and scored twice, Reeser added one hit and drove in three.

The Nittany Lions will face New England College in a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 6. First pitch of game one is set for 9 a.m.
