Women's Basketball Falls to Keystone

Reading, PA- The Penn St. Berks Women's Basketball Team could not rally back, falling to Keystone College in United East play by a score of 79-67 on Saturday, Dec. 7.  

The Lions (0-8 Overall, 0-2 UE) got off to a solid start, grabbing a 5-1 lead after Ashlyn Clark hit a 3-pointer. Keystone (4-5 Overall, 1-2 UE) got rolling offensively, leveling the score at nine with 4:05 remaining in the opening quarter. The Giants captured the lead, going on a 7-2 run. Hailey Miller recaptured some momentum for the Lions, converting a layup in the final seconds of the quarter. Keystone increased their advantage early in the second quarter, taking a 24-16 lead. Mahala Ruffner gave the Lions a boost before the break, converting two contested layups in the paint, but Berks trailed 29-22 at the half.

The teams traded buckets in the early portion of the third quarter, with the Giants building a 15-point advantage. Gianna Roberts slashed into the deficit, drilling a 3-pointer. Clark then hit a long jump shot, pulling Berks back within 10 points. The Lions could not pull any closer in the quarter and a 5-0 run gave Keystone a 54-38 lead going into the fourth quarter. Berks tired to rally back in the final frame, with Roberts hitting another 3-pointer to slash the deficit down 14 points. Gabrielle Merritt added a 3-pointer of her own, continuing to chip away at the deficit. Merritt connected on a jump shot with 1:52 remaining to bring the Lions with 10 points. The Lions would not be able to get any closer, eventually falling by a score of 79-67.

Clark led the Lions, finishing the game with a double-double posting 19 points and 14 rebounds. Miller also had a strong offensive performance, racking up 16 points. Roberts led the team with eight assists to go along with eight points.

WHO'S NEXT
The Lions will finish the semester by hosting Penn College on Friday, Dec. 13. The opening tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
