Men's Basketball Falls at the Buzzer

Bryn Athyn, PA- The Penn St. Berks Men's Basketball Team got edged out at the buzzer, falling to Bryn Athyn College by a score of 71-70 in their first United East Conference game on Tuesday, Nov. 26.  

The Lions (0-7 Overall, 0-1 UE) traded buckets in the opening minutes of the game before Bryn Athyn (2-4 Overall, 1-0 UE) went on a 7-0 run to capture the momentum. Kai Davis halted the run with back-to-back baskets. Josh Mingledolph raced out in transition, converting a layup to close within one. Andre Ballard then converted a layup in the paint to give the Lions a 13-12 lead. Bryn Athyn responded, going on an 11-2 run to stretch their lead back out to eight. Luke Collins heated up from beyond the arc, swishing a pair of 3-pointers to cut into the deficit. In the closing seconds of the half, Kyle Jones completed a three-point play, but Berks still trailed 35-29 at the break.

Davis got the Lions' offense going in the second half, converting a three-point play to open the scoring. Mingledolph drilled a jump shot to pull Berks within a single point. The Lions remained within striking distance, eventually leveling the score at 48 with 13:44 remaining in the game after Mingledolph converted a three-point play. Ballard hit a 3-pointer three minutes later to knot the game at 53. Davis then slammed home a dunk in transition, giving the Lions their first lead in the second half. Mingledolph kept Berks in front drilling a 3-pointer off a pass from Jones. Bryn Athyn fought back, tying the score at 62 with 4:46 remaining in the game. The hosts built a five-point lead with under a minute remaining in regulation, but Jones converted two free throws to pull within a single possession. After a missed layup, Collins raced down the floor and finished a layup to pull within one point. Bryn Athyn added a free throw to lead by two with 18 seconds remaining. On the Lions next possession, Collins found Mingledolph for a 3-pointer that gave Berks a 70-69 lead with nine seconds remaining. The Lions could not hold on as Bryn Athyn scored at the buzzer to pick up a 71-70 victory.

Ballard continued his strong start to the season, scoring 20 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists. Mingledolph also shined, scoring 17 points, going 7-14 from the field and hauling in six rebounds. Davis led the Lions in rebounds with eight to go along with 13 points. Collins made a major impact off the bench, scoring 12 and hitting times from beyond the arc. The Lions capitalized off turnovers forcing 21 that directly led to 24 points including 10 on fast breaks.

WHO'S NEXT
The Lions will have a week off before traveling to face Wilson College on Tuesday, Dec. 4. The tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
