Women's Basketball Falls in Fast-Paced Home Opener

Reading, PA- The Penn St. Berks Women's Basketball Team fell in their home opener to Goucher College in a fast-paced game by the score of 115-65 on Wednesday, Nov. 13.

The Lions (0-4 Overall) were under immense pressure from the jump, but Morgan Dunbar and Gabrielle Merritt managed to break through the press and convert layups. Berks kept pace with the Gophers (2-0 Overall) with Dunbar and Merritt converting baskets. Goucher managed to force several turnovers, going on a 12-2 run, leading 24-10 at the end of the first quarter.

Berks continued fighting through the Gophers press and when they did successfully, it led to layups for Gianna Roberts and Dunbar. Dunbar then cut the deficit down to 11 points, completing a three-point play. The Gophers responded by going on a 12-1 run, pulling out to a 21-point advantage. Dunbar continued her big first half, swishing two 3-pointers to bring Berks back within 17 points. The Gophers scored the final four points of the half and led 46-25 at the break.

Roberts kicked off the scoring in the second half, converting a layup in transition off a nifty euro step. Ashlyn Clark then raced down the floor, going coast-to-coast for a layup. The Gophers began to heat up from beyond the arc, hitting a series of 3-pointers to build a 32-point lead. The Lions tried to keep pace with the Gophers with back-to-back layups by Hailey Miller and Merritt cutting down the deficit. Berks could not keep up in the fourth quarter, eventually falling by a score of 115-65.
