Keystone Tops Volleyball in UE Opener

READING, Pa. – The Penn State Berks volleyball team dropped a 3-0 straight set match (25-20, 25-13, 25-12) to Keystone on Tuesday night in United East Conference action.

Freshman Madelyn Caris and senior Diana Stoltzfus led the Nittany Lions with seven kills apiece while Stoltzfus also tied for the team lead with 11 dig with sophomore Katelyn Williams. Freshman Tarynn Coldren paced the offense with 19 assists while adding three digs.

The Giants took early leads of 2-0 and 5-3 in the first set before the Nittany Lion answered each time and knotted the set at five. Berks took its largest lead of the set at 9-6 behind four straight points, but Keystone responded by winning five straight of its own to go up 11-9. Following back and forth action, Caris powered the Nittany Lions back into the lead by scoring three straight points off kills and went up 15-14. Berks extended its lead to 18-16 before Keystone stormed ahead for good and won the set by taking nine of the next 11 points.

In the second, Keystone jumped out to a 9-1 lead and eventually extended its lead to 14-4. Berks rallied behind five straight points to cut the Giants lead down to five points twice at 14-9 and 16-11. However, the Giants won seven straight points to go up 23-11 before closing the set out with back-to-back points.

After each team scored a point to open the third set, the Giants won five of the next six points to go up 6-2. Keystone extended its lead to 11-4 until the Nittany Lions won four straight points to cut the deficit down to 11-8. Once again, the Giants went on a long run while ultimately put away the set and match by winning nine of the next 10 points to go up 20-9.

Berks returns to action on Thursday, October 3rd as it hosts Dickinson in non-conference action at 7:00 p.m.
