MBB drops heartbreaker to Penn College

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 92-91 setback to Penn College in a back-and-forth United East battle on Tuesday night.

The entire game featured 12 lead changes, seven of which occurred in the final 2:30 of the second half. The Wildcats, who led 47-46 at halftime, led by as many as seven points (84-77) with 3:28 left in regulation. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Luke Collins and a pair of free throws by Darik Tannis-Harriet evened the score at 85-all with just 2:28 to go. Collins gave the Nittany Lions the lead with a jumper with 1:56 left, but a three-point play by Gavin Barret put Penn College ahead by one with 1:38 to go. Andre Ballard sunk a pair of shots at the line with 45 seconds remaining to give Berks an 89-88 lead. Landon Reeder put the Wildcats back up by one with 24 seconds, but another pair of baskets at the charity stripe by Ballard had Berks up one with just 8 seconds left. Livingston Cross drove the lane and got a layup with three seconds to play for a 92-91 lead. After a timeout, Marquis Ferreira took the inbound pass, dribbled once and let out a shot from beyond half court. The shot appeared to be on a target as the entire gym went silent, but the shot deflected off the front of the rim as time expired.

Ballard finished the game with a team-high 22 points and contest-best 11 rebounds to notch his second double-double of the season. The senior forward also recorded three steals, two assists, and two blocked shots in 38 minutes of action. Ferreira chipped in 20 points and five assists, while Collins drained five 3-pointers en route to 19 points to go with three assists and three steals. Jaedon Mast and Matthew Gingerich each had eight points and the duo combined for nine rebounds.

Barrett and Cross both had 22 points to lead the Wildcats, followed by Reeder with 16 and David Brown with 12. Reeder grabbed a team-high 10 boards, Ronn Flood Jr. led Penn College with five assists.

The Nittany Lions will travel to St. Mary's College for an United East contest on Saturday, February 3 at 1 p.m.
