Men's basketball picks up season sweep of Abington

ABINGTON, PA - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team picked up a thrilling 96-90 victory on the road over Penn State Abington in an United East contest on Wednesday night.

Throughout the entire game, neither team held a lead larger than six points. The teams exchanged leads and several ties in the first half, with Abington eventually taking a 50-48 lead into the halftime break.

The second half was a back-and-forth battle that saw seven ties and 10 lead changes. Alex Podolski put Abington ahead 74-73 with 6:44 remaining, but that is the last that Berks would trail in the game. Berks' largest cushion was four points over the several minutes of action. Marquis Ferreira, Josh Mingledolph, and Jaedon Mast converted their foul shots down the stretch to help Berks earn a sweep over Abington in the season series.

Ferreira drained four 3-pointers en route to a season-high 29 points to go along with four rebounds and a blocked shot. Andre Ballard chipped in 22 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while Mingledolph added 16 points, four boards, and three steals. Mast, making his first start of the season, finished with 12 points, fix rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Luke Collins had six points and Greg Fuchs followed with five.

Podolski led Abington with a contest-high 33 points, while Kobe Devine added 17 points. Jake Schalki had 15 points and a game-high 10 boards, Myles Haynes and Kolby Miller each had 10 points.

Berks shot 48.4% (31-of-64) from the floor and were 50.0% (13-of-26) from long distance. At the line, they were a very efficient 84.0% after going 21-for-25.

Berks will host Penn State Harrisburg in an United East contest on Saturday, January 27 at 1 p.m.
