WBB drops battle with St. Mary's

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team fought until the end, but came up short in a 62-50 setback to St. Mary's College in United East action on Wednesday evening.

The Seahawks led 24-16 after the first quarter and took a 42-28 lead into the halftime break. But the Nittany Lions dug away at the deficit and trailed 51-38 going into the final period. The teams exchanged baskets throughout the fourth quarter, with Berks getting as close as 10 points down with 1:06 remaining, but that is as close as they would get.

Ashlyn Clark matched a season-high with three 3-pointers made en route to a team-high 18 points. In addition, Clark had three assists, three rebounds, and two steals in 40 minutes of action. Mahala Ruffner recorded nine points and a game-high 14 boards, while also adding three blocked shots. This marked Ruffner's third straight game and seventh time this season with double digit rebounds. Liberty Stitzman and Sam Hagenbush each added seven points and the duo combined for nine rebounds. Hailey Miller finished the game with six points, 10 boards, eight assists, and four steals. Kylie Dunn added a three-pointer just before the buzzer in the first half.

Olivia Liszt had a contest-high 19 points to go with eight rebounds, while Melanie Aguilar had 13 points and Rayna Miller added 10. Amira Whitaker finished with a team-high 11 boards.

The Nittany Lions will host Lancaster Bible College in an United East contest on Saturday, January 13 at 3 p.m.
