St. Mary's pulls away late in United East tilt

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team was in striking distance late in the second half, but St. Mary's College was able to pull away late to secure an 84-68 victory in Wednesday night's United East contest.

The Nittany Lions trailed 41-38 at halftime, but a pair of free throws by Josh Mingledolph knotted the game at 63-all and the sophomore guard put Berks ahead by two with a layup on the following possession with 7:36 remaining. The Seahawks closed out the contest on a 21-3 run to pick up the win on the road.

Matthew Gingerich notched his first career double-double after recording a team-high 17 points and 16 rebounds to go along with four blocked shots and three assists in 36 minutes of action. The sophomore center knocked down five 3-pointers, which was also a career-best performance. Marquis Ferreira followed with 16 points, while Andre Ballard chipped in 14 points, six boards, three assists, and three steals. Kai Davis added nine points and five boards off the bench, Mingledolph finished the game with eight points.

The Seahawks were led by Daryn Alexander with 31 points and seven rebounds, followed by Micah Henry with 23 points and six boards. Jakve Koverman chipped in 13 points and had a game-high 16 rebounds.

The Nittany Lions return to action at home against Lancaster Bible College on Saturday, January 13 at 1 p.m.
