WVB drops a pair of tough matches at Cedar Crest Tri-match

ALLENTOWN, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team opened up the 2023 season with a pair of tough setbacks at the Cedar Crest Tri-Match on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions fell 3-1 to host Cedar Crest College to open the day, followed by a 3-2 heartbreaker to FDU-Florham in the second match of the day.

The Falcons won the first two sets by scores of 25-12 and 25-23, before Berks responded with a 25-19 win in the third game. Cedar Crest later clinched the win with a 25-22 win in the fourth set.

Diana Stoltzfus had a team-high 13 kills, followed by Katelyn Williams with 12 and Jordan Thompson with 10. Aubrey Hunt chipped in seven kills and Makenzie Shoop added five. Williams led the squad with 15 digs, followed by Libby Swoyer (14), Riley Kovach (13), and Hunt (11). Swoyer handed out 37 assists, while Thompson had a team-best five service aces.

Berks opened the second match of the afternoon with a 25-19 win in the opening set, but the Devils won the next two by scores of 25-22 and 25-13. The Nittany Lions kept their hopes alive with a 25-22 triumph in the fourth, but Florham came out on top 15-11 in the decisive fifth set.

Stoltzfus and Williams tied for the team lead with 14 kills, followed by Shoop with 12 and Thompson with six. Swoyer led the Nittany Lions with 16 digs, while Kovach (15) and Williams (12) both recorded double figures in digs. Swoyer finished the contest with 33 assists and team-high five aces.

The Nittany Lions will host their home opener against Marywood University on Thursday, September 14 at 6 p.m.
