Nittany Lions win thriller over Wilkes in season opener

WILKES-BARRE, PA - Maya Dolan netted the lone score of the game and Sophia Gonzalez recorded a shutout as the Penn State Berks women's soccer team opened up its 2023 season with a thrilling 1-0 victory on the road over Wilkes University on Friday night.

This was the Nittany Lions second straight season opening win over Wilkes and was just the fourth time in program history that Berks started out the season with a victory.

The two sides played an evenly matched opening half with both teams taking four shots, three on net. Gonzalez and her counterpart Hannah Landis were up to the challenge on each attempt that came their way.

Berks came out strong in the second half as Sara Hathaway, Madi Craley, and Paige Borkowski all recorded a shot on goal in the first seven minutes of the second half. Unfortunately, none of those three shots were able to find the back of the net. Moments later, a Berks throw-in found its way to Hathaway at the baseline. The senior forward played it to over to Dolan, who took a touch and beat the keeper with a shot inside the near post. The goal was not only the first of the season for Dolan, but was also the first of her collegiate career.

Following the score, the Berks defense continued its strong play and Gonzalez made a pair of stops to maintain the shutout. Gonzalez finished the contest with five saves to pick up the win and the ninth shutout of her career.

The Colonels held an 6-4 advantage on corner kicks, but Berks had an 8-5 edge in shots on goal.

Berks will host its home opener against Moravian University in a non-conference contest on Sunday, September 3 at 2:30 p.m.
